They now seek to recruit a Functional Safety Engineer responsible for providing expertise and as a primary interface to both internal and external contacts.


Tasks include:

  • Collect customer functional safety requirements, evaluate compliance and note areas of non-conformance and/or opportunities for requirement modifications

  • Development of technical work products specific to functional safety, e.g. hazard and risk assessment, item definition, functional safety concept, technical safety concept, FTAs, FMEDAs, criticality analyses, other safety analyses, and test coverage analysis of safety requirements.

  • Review of test cases and evaluation of test results (component test, vehicle test)


To be successful in your application for this role you will need:

  • University degree in electrical engineering, electronics, systems theory, physics, computer science or a comparable technical study program.

  • Professional experience in electronics development and functional safety, battery experience highly advantageous

  • Sound knowledge of ISO 26262, IEC 61508 or similar standards

  • High motivation and ability to analyse complex technical systems

Based in the Bay area of San Francisco, our client is a dynamic and innovative developer of energy storage and distribution systems.


They are currently seeking to recruit an adept Senior Systems Engineer who will lead the evaluation, selection and qualification of new cells and cell packs for the energy storage solutions. This role requires hands-on experience with battery technologies, in particular, lithium ion batteries.


In this role the successful candidate will:

  • Lead the selection and qualification process of new cell technologies and manufacturers, based on product quality, cost and performance requirements, for use in energy storage applications and perform characterization of new cells and new cell technologies.

  • Lead the requirement management process for cells and cell packs. This involves communicating directly with the cell / cell pack suppliers when needed. Domestic and international travel is expected too.

  • Participate in the definition of safety functions performed by the BMS and the system for the safe operation of energy storage products. This includes contribution to DFMEA analysis.


To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to have:

  • MS or higher degree in chemical, material science, electrical engineering or electrochemistry along with relevant work experience in the field of Li-Ion battery / battery pack research or development.

  • Deep understanding of the electro-chemical fundamentals of lithium ion cell operation and various lithium ion technologies.

  • Strong hands on experience in evaluating, testing and analyzing cells and cell packs (including tear down). This includes the ability to perform lab and chamber long tests as well as strong modeling and simulation capabilities of electrical cell models.

  • Good understanding of thermal models of Li-Ion cells.


Desired experience – the following will be an advantage:

  • Experience with new technologies like solid state batteries and fuel cells

  • Experience with renewable energy systems, including codes and standards for ESS.
